SmartPlugs make it possible to convert either gasoline or Diesel engines to easily start and run on 130 proof ethanol (35% water 65% ethanol or methanol)

This video is of a news crew on board the University of Idaho's Van.

Notice there is no high voltage coil or cap or or spark plug leads on the distributor. You can see the rotor spinning, but it is not being used to distribute the spark - because SmartPlugs need no spark or high voltage to run the engine.

SmartPlugs are a internationally patented, precision timed catalytic ignition (catalytic glow plug) No distributor, points, Coil or high voltage wires are needed. Only 12-18 DC volts need to be applied to the tops of the SmartPlugs.

The Van makes more power and gets the same miles to the gallon(dry ethanol basis) on 130 proof ethanol as it did on gasoline. No NOx is produced during combustion due to the low flame temperature of dilute ethanol mixtures. The catalytic ignition enables complete combustion of this cool burning fuel.
