  • It is important to notice that he's just practicing at mid speed as he will hit differently mid-game

  • I guess your coach is wrong then.

  • @Pdr00000000 If you have time to set up this is the way, but it changes in a match

  • Notice how still his head is upon contact, so so perfect, And yeah he isn't really being pushed to hit uncomfortable volley's so his foot work can be a little lazy here

  • @Tennistruth there is none

  • @Pdr00000000 The only real difference in a match that he will have is stepping out/forward more as he makes contact with the ball. There really should be very little racquet head speed, and consequently when stepping forward his wrist will hold the racquet head above the net upon contact.

  • See if you can spot the grip shift!

  • They post a warm up vid because u can't get as close up while he's playing a match

  • agreed.....why would they post a warm up vid?

  • Maybe he's warming up and not doing the usual stuff (stepping in to the volley), but in any case, this seems like a poor video to demonstrate proper volley technique.

  • what you guys are saying will takes forever to learn. What I saw in this video is federer favor his left side more than the right side with the left hand. That means the volley should be stronger on the left side. But federer make up for his right side with footwork like inside volley to make sure it stays in.

In short, have your racquet pointing to your left side. When the ball comes to your left side, swing compact. To your right side, use footwork to hit it over. Be sure to bend the wrist.
