"Ue o muite arukō" (上を向いて歩こう "Look up while walking") is a Japanese song that was performed by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyu_Sakamoto), and written by Rokusuke Ei and Hachidai Nakamura.

It is best known under its alternative title "Sukiyaki" in English-speaking parts of the world. The song reached the top of the sales charts in the United States in 1963, and was the only Japanese language song to do so. In total it sold over 13 million copies internationally.

This was a hit in Japan and topped the Billboard pop charts in the United States in 1963 -- to date the first and only song sung entirely in Japanese to do so. The song text is a tragic story, which many Americans are unaware of. The song was translated into English by the female R&B duo A Taste of Honey in 1981; the English version, which told the story of a love gone wrong, was almost as big a hit as the original, reaching #3 on the Hot 100, and was brought back into the Top 10 once more by the R&B vocal group 4 P.M. in 1994. Sakamoto, however, had only one other song reach the U.S. charts, "China Nights (Shina no Yoru)," which peaked at #58 in 1963.

The lyrics start as follows:

上を向いて歩こう ue o muite arukō (look up while walking)

涙がこぼれないように namida ga kobore nai yō ni (so tears won't fall)

思い出す春の日 omoidasu haru no hi (recalling spring days)

一人ぼっちの夜 hitoribocchi no yoru (alone tonight)

but it doNt end there....

  • what does that last comment have to do with this video? lol.

  • Waaaaah. Bush won two elections fair and square. You're all miserable pathetic losers wringing you hands over fantasies and delusions of war crimes. Please get lives. Your little round John Lennon glasses are getting all steamed up. Chill. Tear down the Che posters, take showers and get some lives. Your becoming embarassing to the rest of society.

  • Nice work, truly fucking funny! Keep up the great Work!!!

  • Here it is almost six months later and I'm still waiting for you to perfect your playing of "Ue o muite arukō". And still no impeachment either. The rest of the World needs to charge those guys with War Crimes cause they will not be held to account here, obviously.

Please give us the rest of the song. I want to hear you whistle, too. Peace!
