The Alma Redemptoris Mater like the Salve Regina is one of the 4 Marian Antiphons sung throughout the Catholic ecclesiastical year. Philips opens this piece with flourishes of contrapuntal polyphony, much as in the style of Palestrina, the piece is joyful and melodious dealing with the subject matter. The Virgin Mary's announcement by the Angel Gabriel that she is to bare the Son of God. The end of the piece is more subdued in a penitential way in a homophonic echo of peccatorum miserere.

  • Bellissimo!Non conoscevo questa versione dell'Alma redemptoris mater di Peter Philips è molto bella.

  • Nice one, thanks.

  • An exemplary example of joyous melodious choristry.

A translation to traditional English is singularly appropriate in this context.
