Time-lapse video showing the illustrator of the Aldo Zelnick Comic Novels as she uses crayons to color the cover drawing for Dumbstruck, book four of the alphabetical series for middle-grade readers.
Kendra uses a standard set of Crayola crayons—circa 1988...with quite a few missing—and layers her strokes in many different directions to achieve this look.
The cover drawings from this series are often inspired by a famous work of art. Dumbstruck's cover is reminiscent of Warhol's screen prints (notice how the kids' art teacher resembles Marilyn?), while Cahoots spoofs American Gothic and Artsy-Fartsy is a sly reference to Norman Rockwell's famous self-portrait.
