The glide ratio is not as important in an ultralight since they fly slower you're also descending slower, so you can take advantage of more sources of lift. It's a different niche.

for that sort of money, you could buy a descent used glider like an ASW 24, which looks much nicer..

You have missed the point, it is half the weight, folds down to fit in and on a family car and is brand new, not second hand.
The Alatus / AL12M is a self launcher, the price includes the power plant.

It has a 2 hour range and costs approximately 18500 GB pounds including tax.

The engine is the Corsair Black Devil, with proper maintenance it will last indefinitely. Realistically, I would guess 500 to 1000 hours or 5 to 10 years of service.
