There are five female directors among the 13 members of Microsoft Germany's executive board, quite an exception in the world of big business. The corporation actively recruits women, not least because they are a largely untapped source in its constant search for highly skilled employees.

The services that make it a very popular employer -- flexible working hours, opportunities for part-time employment, family services and in-house child care -- are available to both men and women. Nonetheless Angelika Gifford thinks they can still be improved. Gifford is a manager, mother of a three-year-old son and mentor for management trainees at Microsoft. Marion Hütter met Gifford, who is also one of the organisers of a diversity workshop intended to improve the corporate culture.
