Just showing some basics of what's involved in changing the rear main seal on a Jeep 4.0 motor. Part 2 is where I show a neat tip for installing the new upper seal. I am in no way a pro, and I'm sure there are 100 guys who can do this 100x's better than me, but this is what I did.

  • Doesn't the soap get into the oil and break it down? I know you didn't use a lot of soap, I just don't know how much it takes to break the oil down because that is what the soap is designed to do. Thanks!!

  • @johndanita Good point, but virtually all of the soap would be squeezed out when the seal goes in so I don't think it is an issue at all. It is what the manual calls for so I'm comfortable with it and have never had any issues on the ones I've done. They are all running strong. :)

  • Did you spray gasket remover to get the gasket off the block? and would using Astro Glide be better to use than soap and why did you put the seal on then squirt the soap? sorry for all the ?? im going to do this on my XJ just want to be sure

  • @My96XJ I just used a good gasket scraper to get the old material off the block, no gasket remover. I would just stick with soap since that's what is recommended. I think they say soap because it will burn off and leave a solid seal, whereas oil would not burn away as easily, but that is the only thing I can come up with in my mind. Squirting the soap around the crank was just to lube it up to help the seal work around the channel. No worries about the questions, ask away!

  • what was the torq specs for the 2 crank bolts that you removed? i suppose you Dont live near Kansas City do you ?

  • @My96XJ You mean the the bolts going through the rear bearing cap that holds the lower half of the seal? 80 lbs. And I live in Florida, sorry! Hang in there, you can do this, just take your time and ask questions if you get stuck!
