Videotaped on October 28, 2008 in Newark, NJ, CBS 2 News cameraman Jim Quodomine attempts to film a peaceful march taking place on the public property of the sidewalk outside of a church. It is being held by members of the community wishing to draw attention to young victims of violence in the community. Before he can get any footage, he is confronted by New Jersey special police officer Brian Shariff, who points in his direction and demands that he "put that camera away." While Jim attempts to ignore the illegal order and continues to record, the officer takes a step towards him, once again pointing at him and demanding that he "put the camera away." Now visibly agitated, Shariff takes another step towards Jim, yelling, "put the camera away!" Though he is only excercising his First Amendment right to Freedom of Press, officer Shariff advances on Jim immediately and violently attempts to snatch his camera. As Jim resists the illegal seizure of his property, a struggle ensues between himself and the officer, and the camera loses focus. At this point, officer Shariff can be heard yelling, "My man! my man! you heard what I just said, man!? now, you get the camera outta here right now!" Jim continues to resist, and can be heard telling the officer, "whoah! you get your hands off my camera!" This is followed by a clear shot of his legs, from the waist down, ackwardly running forward, apparently in the direction that the officer is attempting to pull his camera away from him, while he still maintains his grip on his property. As the struggle continues, the camera again loses focus. When a clear picture reemerges, Officer Shariff now has Jim in a chokehold. There is a clip in the scene, and the video cuts back in to a view that is mostly sky with a sideways bit of the officer's shoulder in the very left edge of the shot. Jim's co-worker, on-scene reporter Christine Sloan, can be heard yelling, "stop! you're hur-" to Shariff, while the officer yells, "put your hands behind your back!," to Jim. As she again yells, "stop!" to Shariff, the officer tells Christine, "no! he's going with me. he's going with me." in regards to Jim. An alarmed Christine yells, "you can't arrest him!," attempting to object to officer Shariff's illegal detainment of her crewmen. Officer Shariff responds by telling her, "I could do whatever I want!" Jim is subsequently handcuffed, and placed into the back of a police cruiser.

Shortly after this incident, officer Shariff proceeds to threaten to arbitrarily arrest Christine. As she attempts to ask the officer a question, he responds, saying, "none of your business. Stay away from me, right now. Or, you'll be sitting in that car."

Jim Quodomine was arbitrarily given a summons for "disorderly conduct."

Police Officer Brian Shariff was later suspended without pay, while charges against Jim Quodomine were eventually dropped. In Oct. 2009, Quodomine filed a 17-count federal lawsuit against Shariff.

  • we need police brutality because society is out of control and they only relate to the language of brutality. I support our officers for taking actions against black, white, muslim , christian or hindu. people are sick and tired of a society full of cases of i.q below room temperature. society is not acting anymore with responsibility and measures of brutality are needed. arrest them, detain them, taser them and don't read any rights for them, they got nothing but arrogance and sheer stupidity.

  • @PuntHornofSomalia Eugenics is merely a psuedo-scientific excuse by the death-worshipping parasites of this earth to satisfy their bloodlust against humanity, plain and simple!

  • thats not a choke hold. he has his arm around him that's all

  • @weinmanjoe Starting at @0:54, and lasting for at least a few seconds, officer Shariff can be clearly seen executing a rear naked chokehold on Quodomine. As a result of the move, the cameraman is held in position by his neck. Any attempt he makes to move will result in choking pressure on his neck. A "chokehold" should not be confused with a "blood choke," which occurs when pressure is applied to the neck in order to deprive a victim of oxygen, and therefore, induce unconsciousness.

  • Follow directions and this won't happen. Not a hard concept.

  • This cop works for us as a civil servant? Is this how u treat your boss by violating his rights and assaulting him? Such bullshit.

  • @xxwesdogxx That's a great point, of course! We must always keep in mind the fact that the mainstream media has repeatedly betrayed the public through constant media black and brown outs of information about these cop cases! And, this was ESPECIALLY true BEFORE the invention of the internet, when they enjoyed an almost total monopoly on information! Most of what is covered now is through force, because CITIZEN WATCHDOGS showed enough bravery to CONTINUE RECORDING, even in the face of ARREST!

  • @MrMeatballs1945 As I told @weinmanjoe: starting at @0:54, officer Shariff can be clearly seen executing a rear naked chokehold on Quodomine.
