@dookiex Oh ok! Sounds like an interesting read!

@TalkingAndStuff In other words, he was pointing out that the government were enforcing things that would have the least gain when they should be doing more impactful things such as subsidizing cost of purchase and ownership of new cars (safer, much better emissions, etc.). There's a great piece in that book about how soup houses and homeless shelters are actually very ineffective at helping the homeless since the homeless mostly do not use these facilities.

@TalkingAndStuff Nah, car pooling isn't a bad idea but according to Gladwell, they are doing other things that are counter-intuitive. The great example he explains is that there should be some kind of subsidy for the cost of ownership of a new car versus a old car. Like how come insurance is cheaper on old cars when old cars are more dangerous to drive and they are also the ones causing the pollution due to high emissions? Things like that, really interesting discussions.

@dookiex Ah I see! I don't think car pooling is necessarily "the wrong solution". I agree that it isn't a permanent solution, more like something to do in a transitory phase as cars are being improved to be made more available with lower emissions. I don't think that car pooling or public transportation is necessarily a bad idea! :P

@TalkingAndStuff Don't get me wrong, they are useful but what tends to happen is that we trust things like stop lights more thus when crossing the street, we often do not bother to look both ways just because it the sign says walk. There's a great section in the book where he talks about gas emissions from cars and how car pooling is actually the wrong solution to the problem (making newer cars more easily attainable would be the better idea since newer cars have lower emissions

@dookiex Ah, interesting I don't think I have heard of that book! intriguing! :) I still think I might feel uncomfortable without stop signs and traffic lights and what not though haha!

@TalkingAndStuff Glad you asked. I read it in a Malcolm Gladwell book, I believe it was in What the Dog Saw. Right up your alley since you very apparently love reading and love discussions pertaining to social sciences and human behavior in general. The ABS study was done in Germany I believe. Basically the taxi drivers tended to drive more carelessly because they knew that ABS was there. Gladwell has two TED Talks available on Hulu, they are both pretty short, you would love it

@dookiex interesting! where/how was the study done?
