It's all a matter of perspective and interpretation! I'd almost say that Giygas only became the villain that he was because he was separated from Maria's love. When he was faced with mother's love, he couldn't be the villain anymore.

In Mother 2, of course Pokey's intervention meant Giygas never even got to feel Maria's love in the first place. :(

Giygas was driven to madness by the reminder that his mother loved him, but did not really love him (ie she loved George and her own child). Ninten alone was a reminder that Maria had her own real family. Him singing that song was too much to bear. He probably was already mentally unstable and went crazy. Giygas then turned into what we saw at the end of earthbound. Giygas initially influenced Pokey with his last remnants of sanity. Pokey probably took the reigns after Giygas went crazy.
