I don't know why everyone always categorizes Elliott with Bright Eyes, that's a slap in the face in my opinion, Elliott wasn't an overly emotional scene kid trying hard to be a tormented songwriter

They're not even comparable, he's not comparable to Mountain Goats, Fleet Foxes, or Kirker either, Elliott may have been an indie musician, but he was on another planet than these guys, I can't stand it when people put Elliott Smith and Bright eyes in any kind of list together.

@rohiogerv22 In logical terms I agree that music is purely subjective and to say that any artist is better than another is a meaningless statement, but personally I think that Elliott Smith is a musician that touches my soul in so many ways that even a god couldn't compare.

I believe Elliott is much better than Conor. I think the music is more genuine and more worthwhile. But the concept that any artist is "beyond comparison" is childish idolatry. Elliott was a man who sang from his heart. He wasn't the incarnation of God on Earth.

Elliott Smith is my favourite musical artist, I adore him, but my best friend is equally attached to Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes - is she a poser? you could make the same negative comments about Elliott, and they would be equally plausible yet equally wrong, Elliott isn't a God, and i'm pretty sure he'd never be so goddamn arrogant or close-minded as you. Conor Oberst is alright, I suppose (I am trying to be kind). But that kid couldn't even string Elliott's guitar. No comparison. I saw Elliott perform no less than 30 times. Couldn't get enough. I saw Bright Eyes play (before he "got big"-there were about 20 people in the crowd, Spoon opened for crying out loud- at Brownies in NYC). Once was enough. Elliott was the best. Coincidentally, the first time I saw Elliott was at Brownies too.

@zampanolastada Elliott Smith gained popularity in Portland, and was raised primarily in Texas. Yes, he was born in Omaha, but I wouldn't say he really helped build up the music scene there, especially not as much as Saddle Creek Records did. Just clearing things up.
