Thats not entirely true. Its inspired by both the book "The diary of an assasin" by Arthur Bremer, which is about the assasination of George Wallace, and the assasination of JFK. This is confirmed by Gabriel himself at a concert in Paramount Theater, Seattle, 10th August 1983.
