Interview By Josh Burns With Special Guest, Barefoot Runner Skye Mangrum

Barefoot running is one of the most "badass" new fitness routines on the block. Every day now, more and more athletes and runners are eschewing their shoes in favor of what "God shod us in"...
And as those pink and springy soles hit the ground, a whole new category of athletic injury, pain, and discomfort bursts onto the scene. From blisters to tears, abrasions, contusions and just plain old sore feet, barefoot running can be rough on your poor tootsies - so here with some tips for barefoot running foot care is special guest journalist Skye Mangrum, straight from her runaway success YouTube channel: http://www.YouTube.com/howtorunbarefoot
JB: So Skye - what are some ways that people new to barefoot running can keep their feet injury free and healthy?
Skye: Great question Josh - first off it's super important that you focus on good barefoot running form while you're out there on the roads or trails. Instead of the "heel to toe" gait most runners are used to, you'll want to run more like a little kid does - letting your mid-foot hit the ground first, and then transferring the weight down onto the heel, followed by the rest of your foot.
JB: That sounds a little complicated, is there a good video I can check out to see what you mean?
Skye: Oh- yes hold on... (pause) okay, it's on my YouTube channel and it's called: Barefoot Running Foot Care - that video also has some video tips on the other advice I've got for you.
JB: Perfect - so what other ways can new barefoot running enthusiasts take care of their feet while training?
Skye: Well the next barefoot running tip is, don't push it when you're getting started. Just run a few minutes - no longer than five in bare feet each day - that will help you toughen them without beating them up too much. And try to find some nice soft grass, a beach or a soft trail to do your five minutes of barefoot running on instead of pavement.
The next barefoot running foot care trick I've got for you is after-care. When you're finished with your daily barefoot running routine, go inside and wash your feet to clean off any debris or gunk you might have stepped in. While you're washing your feet, give them a good look over and check for any cuts, scrapes, nicks, or bruising that might need attention.
Depending on where you live, this is a great time to check your feet and legs for ticks.
If you've hurt your feet while out barefoot running, you might want to take it easy for a day or two to let them heal.
And the last barefoot running foot care tip I've got for you might not be scientific, but it sure feels nice - and that's to find someone to give you a nice foot rub! Your feet are one of the most sensitive parts of your body - after your genitals and your mouth - so all the abuse of barefoot running can be really tough on them.
A nice long foot rub after you're done barefoot running for the day can make a huge difference in your mood.
JB: Skye, thanks so much for sharing with us! Where can our budding barefoot running friends find more ways to protect their feet?
Skye: Ah - well, there's a free "survival kit" report I swear by - any barefoot runner should download a copy - let me get you that website address:

  • You look good in this vid. No need for extra makeup, fancy clothing, necklaces or all that.

  • @gt198gtr

    I second that.

Skye, you have natural stunning looks. The less make-up you wear and the less you do to yourself the more beautiful you are! Thanks for the barefoot running tips. Please do more vid's when actually out training, cleaning up feet etc :-)

  • hot water causes musles to constrict? im not saying icing your foot after running is bad, but im sure that heat cause matter to expand and the cold to contract.

  • Recently started running barefoot / in huarache sandals, followed all the tips, took it slow, everything was going so well, until two days ago I OVERDID IT! The only problem I haven't encountered yet is sore calves(lol?), but since that day my left foot and leg have been worthless, it hurts like a mofo! Some pain now developing in the right foot as well, though not as severe as the left one. Pain in soft tissue near the groin, left side. Pain in the left side of my back. Time to see a doctor?

  • Good job she's fit wasn't listening to a word she said

  • @112gern if you don't want your feet smelling, use aftershave for desinfetion. use it after shower and b4 putting your feet into the shoes.

  • As often as you are barefoot, do your feet ever really smell? I am guessing not. You have to know that there is a growing fanbase for your feet just because of the popularity of the fetish, and due in no large part because you are a beautiful girl. I feel bad, but your timeless beauty is always going to get in the way of your message about holistic health. I am quite proud of you for what you are doing.

  • i'm in love, come to australia

  • sry but this is total bullshit, running barefoot on a road is bad for ur shin / knees

u wanna run barefoot ,go to the beach run with a bikini, wanna improve ur running do squats

  • Why not just tell people to run with vibrams first?

Run with those for like a month, then work into running straight up barefoot?

  • gee.. I wonder if the youtube audience is predominately men...

  • Pumice stone seems rather counter productive. Isn't callus a good thing for barefoot running?
