Saltire Cross (The)
In the dawn of a cold, clear day,
By the North Sea at a shallow ford,
A king of Scots did kneel and pray
Circled by men who'd die at his word.
A foe-man came to the Land o' Loth,
The Saxon King, strong and fell.
Ruin our land with flames and wrath
Drive King Angus to the Fires of Hell.
The invaders came from south and west
Outnumbered were the northern men
Fate looked grim at the very best
Loyal clansmen faced death again.
Then heaven's light fell on that field,
Saltire sky, pure white on blue.
Warriors took heart, leaning on steel
At St Andrew's cross an oath swore true.
Scots repelled the enemy advance
Saxon blood turned the ford to red
Highland steel made invaders dance
Neath the sign the Sassenach fled
Freedom bought and dearly paid
That fateful day by those who fell
Paid the price, now we must say
Freedom's not for rogues to sell.
This realm has given to friend and foe
Our blood and sweat and tears
The voice of Scotia the world will know
Echoing vibrant, strong and clear.
This day in time folk of our land
Declare anew that all shall see
Our time has come, here we stand
Heads held high, beside the free.
Cracking song Hazel, well done.
Slainte!
