Cuban lady reading alpha and numberic items, and broadcasting them into the aethyr. Supposedly for the covert undercover espionage agents to intercept, decode, and receive instructions from Communist Cuba.

I've heard these stations in the past, but this was the first time I had a camera nearby. This part of the electromagnetic spectrum was silent tonite.
These stations pop up unannounced, I just happened to be spinning the dial of the Icom IC-71A. It's a dream receiver, and caught it.

  • I'm listening to it right now(1/30/2011) going on 40 minutes straight, woman listing numbers in groups of five in Spanish and the day before that at around the same time (0800 UTC) I had heard a morse code transmission on the same frequency. Too bad I'm not skilled enough in reading morse code though. Man, I wish I knew what these numbers represent. Any ideas?

  • @barmaley1982 I believe it is a relic from the Cold War. The Cuban Lady is sending coded messages to their intelligence agents undercover in hostile lands. Real James Bond stuff. Kind of archaic now, but it still exists. As far as I know, no one has decyphered the coded groups.

Search Wikipedia for "Numbers station" and you'll get the story behind the messages.

  • really in USB? i thought it transmits in AM.

  • I have 100's of recordings of stuff like this.

It's classified military code from Cuba to their agents in Europe. Shortwave broadcasted number sequences are matched to a coded card on the receiving end and a message is deciphered. Many countries use this technique. Many countries also use letters and even musical tones that can be played into a receiver that deciphers codes from the notes.

During the Cold War, the SW freq's were full of this stuff.. : )
