On February 23, the Chicago Humanities Festival hosted Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard Law Professor hailed by Time Magazine as one of the "New Sheriffs of Wall Street." The former Chair of the Congressional TARP Oversight panel, Warren currently serves as Assistant to President Obama and Special Advisor on Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

At one of her few public appearances since her appointment, Warren talked about her personal journey in public service and its culmination in the building of a new agency dedicated to protecting American consumers.

The Chicago Humanities Festival is thrilled to make Elizabeth Warren's entire presentation available to stream online at http://www.chicagohumanities.org. Generously sponsored by the Alter family, this lecture honors the late Joanne H. Alter's pioneering work on behalf of women interested in social action and public service.

  • Hi all, a reminder to keep the comments civil. "The test of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function." F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Crack-Up", Esquire Magazine (February 1936).

  • this woman wants to protect Democrat and Republican people at the same time. 99% of Americans should be pushing the Government for this woman to be in charge of their protection. Whoever fights her nomination is getting paid by some corporation (why isn't that person in jail?). Isn't that obvious? The longer it takes the more obvious is that the Government is corrupt all the way to their foundation.

  • Why does the new GOP majority so hate this amazing woman's no-nonsense message about our banks? Why do they want to reverse Wall Street Reorm altogether?

  • @samten10a

It had nothing to do with deregulating the banks. The crash was caused by government intervention in the housing market. Why do you think banks were giving out these subprime loans?

  • @songdino

Becasue it was regulations and government intervention that caused the financial crisis in the first place.

  • this person needs to be placed into the Senate, NOW.

  • i just want to do to bankers what the french did to their last king and queen...i'm sorry, i'm just so ANGRY and FURIOUS at what these institutions did and they get away with it, scotch free.

  • love elisabeth. such a way cool person

  • Elizabeth is such a refreshing voice in our government and makes a lot of sense....we need her in the senate....

  • Common sense stuff from an expert that would sort a lot of economic problems for 99% of Americans.

    She needs bodyguards.

  • She is an attractive person, and I like her, but I can see why many people do not. Listen to her. She starts out talking about wanting to be a schoolteacher and about being a "mommy" and potty training. I do not find that encouraging. This is not a person who wants to do any listening. She is a pontificator. She wants to teach us and take care of us. None of the people who declared bankruptcy were at fault for overspending, too much debt, and foolish choices. I don't feel comfortable with her.

  • The people are at fault that this has happened. They bought into deregulating the banks and S&L in the 1970.

It would be simple to fix if the people of United States of America, the citizens of United States of America wanted to fix the problem. Just write your congress person of both houses. Ask them how to recall them if they don’t fix the problem and how to word the petition for the recall.
