  • Mon dieu! La voix de Mireille Mathieu. Après tant d'année hors de France c'est une surprise d'entendre cette voix qui était si populaire dans mon enfance.

    Une bonne surprise.

  • After English, French is - by a very wide margin indeed - the world's most widely taught foreign language. It is used as a working language of the UN, the EU, the AU, the CoE, the ICC, the Red Cross, NATO, Doctors Without Borders, the OECD ...

  • @maximus0032 The day Spanish even begins to approach the importance and influence of French will be "cuando las ranas críen pelo." As someone fluent in English, French, and Spanish, I can't begin to describe how much more useful French has been compared to Spanish in my personal and professional lives. While Spanish may have more primary speakers, French is so powerful precisely because it is supported by hundreds of millions of second language speakers.

  • @maximus0032 As someone who grew up in French Algeria, your comment is dangerously misguided and your background knowledge horribly lacking. I am truly unsure how Algeria could have been further integrated into the French Republic; it was as much a department of France as, say, Bretagne. I'm not sure how you can sit behind your keyboard and make such asinine comments while ignoring the Décrets Crémieux or the Four Communes Resolutions, among other events ...

  • @vanhalen8200 There is a HUGE difference between French, Spanish & British colonization. The Spanish and the Brits not only colonized, but expanded and integrated their societies in their new found territories. This is something that the French did not do very well, with the exception of Quebec. Nowadays Spanish and British Blood can be found in all continents, and by the millions. This is something that France was never able to do quite well. Africa was just a temporary possession, no more.

  • @vanhalen8200 yes they are wealthy, its just that the income is not spread out evenly. having said that, not all countries in Lat Am have the same resources. You just can't compare Brazil vs Guatemala or Mexico vs Uruguay.

  • Love the Language, Love the Food, but seriously, why should France and the few French speaking people pretend that French is as important as English or Spanish. La Francophonie is no more then a political game, a very old one indeed, set to be the "competition" of the Commonwealth. If you look closely many of these "french" speaking do NOT even speak French. Others like Canada are represented like 3 times within the same body. silly. All in all, French is the 10th language spoken natively.

  • You Francofones are proud to keep you culture alive for as long as you can... good luck :)

  • @vanhalen8200 For England, New Zealand and Australia have started the Commonwealth control (which bind them economically in the uk). For Spain and Portugal, these settlements date back more than three hundred years. They were not at all in the same time ...

  • @donga33260 Brazil (x portuguese colony) is not third world, Chile , uruguay, Costa Rica (X Spanish colonies) are not third world, Australia, New Zealand (x English colonies) are not Third world.
