Four persons in the chaos weeks during Jakarta riots in May 1998: Bing, May, Antares, and Gandang. Bing is Chinese descendant with the only daughter called May. May, 22 years old, is dating Antares, a film school student who comes from low class family. Gandang who works as laundry staff in 5 stars hotel near the airport is waiting for the birth of his first child.
The riots changed their life. Bing had to sell all she had including her house with illogically low price to Gandang in order to find refuge in Malaysia. Antares chose making his documentary to pick up May. He could not find May anywhere when he finally got the chance to go back to the house.

Gandang is now a rich landlord. Bing works in a coffee shop in Malaka. Meanwhile, Antares becomes rich after selling the riots footages with high-rocketing price to International TV stations.. He is now a director and also works in advertising agency.

Ten years later, their paths cross unintentionally. Those unintentional meetings make them think about the choices they made in May 1998. The choices that make them realize that their life now and in the future is based on what they did in the past, the choices that make them wonder and questioning their own humanity.

MAY is a movie about human being in critical condition with the most difficult decisions to make...decisions that could be right... or wrong. MAY is a calling to look back on our humanity. It is a calling to rethink and reconsider about the big tragedy in Indonesia that contributes to shape Indonesia as it is now. It is also about the power of love to forgive.

  • I made this movie to commemorate 10 years of May tragedy in 1998. This movie has been shown in may 2008 nationwide.

Yes I definitely agree we can forgive but we will never forget, that is the intention. Heru Winanto
