This rule is mistaken a lot more often then one would think, since it's a rule in the core rule book. This last week, I witnessed 3 games where the person assumed that if he hit a vehicle with a creature that rends, that a rend happens and he got his creatures strength + 6 + d3. When assaulting a vehicle, you only rend when you role a 6 on the armor penetration, not on the "to hit".

  • I've been out of playing 40k in for awhile, why are the Genestealers getting the back armor in the vid? Shouldn't it be front armor if that's where they connect? Cause I was under the impression you had to assault the rear of the vechile to go against the rear armor.

  • @KingmanHighborn In 5th Edition, it changed so that if a vehicle is assaulted it's always against the rear armor value. This was not the case in 4th edition.

  • There is one case where Rending is on the 'to hit' roll, Eldar Rangers, look in the Codex, it does clearly state in there that if they get a 6 to hit, then the rending rule is played when using the sniper rifle.

  • Good point. These exceptions to the rule do exist, and is what makes creating tutorials so difficult. Thank you for posting this!!!

  • Added the annotation to the end. Again thanks.

  • I would just like to add that 5th edition back armour in CC DOES NOT apply to walkers (dreads ect) before you and your friends get into an argument about it :P @KingmanHighborn

  • Does the Tau cyclic ion blaster get that extra die when it rolls a six to penetrate vehicle armor? It doesn't explicitly state that the CIB is rending but the rules are the same (on a roll to wound of 6, it counts as AP 1).

  • It counts as a S8 Ap2 (Automatic wound).

So basically, a power weapon with s8 against vehicles.

  • some are just too lazy to read the 5th edition rulebook.

  • @jboweruk This is not entirely true. The ruling in the eldar codex is for rangers rolling a 6 (pathfinders 5+) to hit count their hits as AP1 this is not rending as the armour penetration rules for the rending against vehicles do not apply. Rending is also only AP2. Rangers/Pathfinders rend as normal on wounding rolls.

  • cool vid

  • You're more than welcome, it's the exceptions that cause the confusion very often. But also that make the game so much fun too.
