Nope, just one single emitter only, key framed the rate of particle emission to get the bubbling effect.

The birthrate cannot be keyframed,that was what was puzzling me.

Yup the Speed is correct, and it is way easier to go into the timeline and scrub through there and learn to manipulate the timeline to set your keyframes much more easily than doing each by scrolling through the viewer. Plus you are able to actually go directly to zero and up to a set number and ease in and out if you want... that's how I did this after setting just a couple key markers in the animation.
