In normal road driving, it's better to do place your thumbs inside the rim, because the chance of fracture is small. Placing the thumb outside limits control.
When off-roading, than put the thumbs on the rim.

The demonstrator here really should of had the car moving a bit to show this. In this case he has used dry steering, steering while the car isn't moving. This puts strain on the linkages and scrubs the tyres. Also don't put your thumbs inside the wheel. Rest them on the outside. If the car hits something in the road, or you mount the kerb the wheel will turn violently and could break bones in your thumbs.

hm.. my dad has always said that about putting your hand in the wheel, personally its not natural and makes no sense to me why people do it.

Using the 10 to 2 position is good, but don't let your hands cross the 12 o clock position like he does. Look up "pull push steering" instead.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, "Reducing Your Risks In The Crash," 1996, David Zuby, V.P.Research: "Something else to remember, is not to drive with your arm across the steering wheel. The reason is the same as why you sit back and away from an airbag: The initial inflation force can be enough to break your arm."

The reason is the same as why you sit back and away from an air bag: The initial inflation force can be enough to break your arm. Ideally, you want the bag to fully inflate before you contact it. Once the bag is inflated, it provides an energy absorbing buffer as it deflates."
