Video from Eagle Scout Mike E. Fossum from aboard the International Space Station as commander of Expedition 29. What you're seeing is actually the southern lights, or aurora australis, which seems to be stronger than the northern variant, the aurora borealis. The results are stunning, but because I'm part geek, I have to get into a very short—and probably not totally accurate—technical description of what you see. It's interesting to note the aurora is actually caused by our local star, the sun, and it's related to the sun's roughly 11-year cycle of sunspot activity. Observations of these sunspots go back hundreds of years.
