Tilting the Lens: Telling the Story of Sham Shui Po is a book that documents the historic and present impact that Sham Shui Po provides to the Hong Kong community.
This interdisciplinary project was the brainchild of SCAD, a global University and a new resident of Sham Shui Po. Bringing together the fields of heritage conservation, photography and graphic design, they proposed to create a permanent contribution to the historical record of Hong Kong. The journey we embarked upon was boundless in scope, thus we cast a broad net in order to attempt to understand the delicate dynamic of the intangible culture of the Sham Shui Po District and its interaction with the built environment. Equipped with pencils, 4x5 large format and digital cameras, and suffused with a hefty dose of curiosity, we set out to capture a part of the essence of this environment. The photographs in this book celebrate the rich elements and visual experience that Sham Shui Po has to offer. At the same time, we recognize that the multiplicities which inform the urban domain cannot be fully articulated using any one method or study.
