    A lot worse!

  • Had the same problem with a 31 going up Okenshaw Bank onto the Midland Railway at Crofton. We had 30 empty HTV's on, going to Grimy.

Half way up the bank we were grinding the rails, with sparks from all wheels.

I was the guard, and we sanded the rail with our tea mugs. The sand was from the loco boxes.

Class 31's would grind the rail any time if the rail was wet.

31's were bad riders at owt over 45mph, and the handbrake would skin your knuckles if you were not carefull.

    Healey Mills Guard 1983.

  • locomotive needs more weight. Where's the sand?

  • If the video continued I bet you would find that the guy that stepped off the locomotive reached down and grabbed a few hands full of sand off the ground to throw on the rails.

I had to do this on a tourist railroad many times. Usually just a few hand full of sand will get you going again.

  • Aside from the noise and the speedo going crazy, there's a yellow bulb that lights when the wheels are slipping.

  • Overweight - too much load on and needs to double up. The driver is told by a warning in the cab of slipping giving him the chance to correct it. The fact that he slipped so much shows that the driver was either not checking the instrument panel correctly or is just bad

  • How can a loco be overweight? The weight is needed for starting tractive effort so I don't know how a loco can be overweight. Dont know why people say Peds are overweight. If the weighed about 60 tonnes (like you'd expect for something with 1470hp) then their starting tractive effort would be too low for anything but passenger trains and the lightest freights.

  • I know of some 31s that have the little white light that comes on when the wheels are slipping, not sure if all of them do. You can feel it if you are a driver anyway, because accelerating just feels different.

You can certainly know if the wheels are slipping on the loco and you are a passenger. drinks go flying lol

  • wow there is actually someting worse than a ALCo
