Obama & Roberts Screw Up Oath of Office!

Each president recites the following oath, in accordance with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

They both screwed up, but the media seem to say one or the other screwed up, depending of their love/hate for the new president. Strange how subjective news can be isn't it?

An important point missing from this assessment is the grammar. The Oath of Office, as written in the Constitution, is grammatically incorrect. Roberts is a stickler about grammar. Every member of the Supreme Court should be, for a misplaced comma can radically alter the meaning of a written law. Roberts stated the Oath as it should have been written, whether he intended to do that or not. It's likely Obama had the Oath memorized but noticed a word out of place from how he had memorized it.

@TheNeaL777 A well written comment, so I was interested in your assertion that Oath is grammatically incorrect. My research shows this is not really true for two reasons:

1) Splitting infinitives is a grammar myth that comes from Latin. We don’t even speak a Latin root language (It is a widely believed myth though)

2) The oath has a split verb phrase because there is no “to” in the phrase.

It is true that Roberts does not like to split infinitives and he thinks this grammar myth is real.
