The satellite radio that entertains you while commuting can provide crucial, real-time, local info to avoid problems in a disaster. More focused than broadcast radio, they offer special emergency traffic & weather channels for some cities. A new type of GPS offers similar benefits: web-based, it's programmed to automatically compare data from several cars in a given area to determine, for example, if there's sudden tie-up, and it alters directions immediately based on that feedback
I don't mean to be a prick, but nationally broadcasted satellite radio stations, such as Sirius XM Weather & Emergency really won't broadcast anything that you wont hear on local AM/FM stations for free.

Interesting. What company makes the GPS device you were talking about?
