not all films are about "plot", and (in my opinion) what makes this movie so good is that it works in different ways. it works as a film about a man corrupted by greed and power, but it also works as an allegory for capitalism vs the church. it also has a perfectly handled eerie atmosphere that helps to create the effect of daniel day lewis character turning into madness. and the cinematography is pretty good too.

cinematography is wonderful! as Quentin Tarantino said, the first time you watch the movie it seems as if there are no set pieces, in plot and and shots, but they are just so well integrated with the movie that you don't notice! :P
