I Love this version - Though I'm sure the duet version [in the 'vaults' allegedly] would've been a number One hit and was the 'Thriller' track missing from her self-titled Quincy Jones produced LP [the same year - as a certain Michael ..........someone] Queen of Rock 2 much for some - i wonder? - and i'd Looooove 2 hear Donna do a version of Cover Me or a whole 'Bruce Springsteen Songbook' album - someone Please suggest it to her !

Thanks for this. Most especially the pics you included w/it...showing the old days w/the new & the back to back w/how different he looks...then & now. ;)
Most poignant, is at 1:30. Bruce would now stand alone in that shot. :(
Danny, Clarence & Bruce...
RIP guys. Together again.

These lyrics sound rather passé coming from a woman, but are strangely interesting coming from man. The idea of the man needing protection subtly changes the meaning of the words, and having the woman standing out in the darkness makes for a more interesting picture than the reverse.

estreetpeppers, thanks for this great song. I have every Bruce album and DVD that exists and I don't have this song. Bruce is simply THE BOSS. Thanks again from Toronto, Canada!!!!!!

Very good version but Donna Summer's vocals are much better (at least in this song:)
Bruce says in his 1998 book SONGS: " 'Cover Me' I'd originally written for Donna Summer. She could really sing and I disliked the veiled racism of the anti-disco movement. When I cut the demo, it came out so good that I held on to it. I later wrote another song, "Protection", and recorded it with Donna and Quincy Jones in L.A."

I've always liked this version of Protection. Very fast paced and full of energy, very similar to Cover Me.
Bruce has enough quality tracks sitting in "the vault" to make 2 more Tracks sets. Let's hope he does.
