The Samford University minority scholarship was created by then-undergraduate student Jewel Littleton, now a special education teacher in the Birmingham city school system. In 2010, it was named in memory of John Porter, longtime pastor at Birmingham's Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, and the first African-American member of the Samford Board of Trustees.
