Dr. Diana provides a hobbyist review of the latest high definition consumer camcorder by Canon the HV30. She provides a brief overview of some of the modifications and upgrades to the HV30 over the HV20 model which was rated #1 consumer camcorder in 2007.

Some tips Dr. Diana has:

*You will need a firewire cable to upload your video to your computer.
* HV20 and 30 capture video via Dv tape not SD card.
*HV30 uses a mini SD card but only for capturing digital still photographs.
* You do not need to use high def tapes for the camera. However, use a good+ quality i.e., Panasonic AMQ (AY-DVM63AMQ).
* Dr. Diana uses Pinnacle studio ultimate version 11. She has already observed that placing standard video with high def vid in the same timeline is not working with Pinnacle.

*Great camera, lots of potential.

* A big thank you to the HV20/30 Forum members for sharing their knowledge and expertise with interested individuals.

  • I was eager to find out if they used tape or card and you gave that info - thank you!

  • This camera is getting dated at this point, however I still like this model better than some of the newer HV Canon models.

  • Hey! Thank you for your videos!!!

Maybe you can help me on this question:

If I record in 25p and then render (?) with 1920x1080 resolution, is my movie 1080p?

Nobody could answer me this question...so I hope you know this :-)

    Ciao!

  • Pingalo,

Probably no one took the time to answer..

The output of your film depends on how you upload it initially to your computer as well. But if you take it in 25p and upload progressive it should end up 1080p as well. Just check the details when uploading and making the movie in your current editing software.

  • Hello There Dr.Diana,

Just curious if you know if there is a mini matte box assembly for this little guy?

  • abigailynn15, go visit the HV20/30 forum site. Do a search for your question. Do not ask the question without first doing a search on the forum. I am sure you will find many individuals who have bought all kinds of access. for the canon HV30. There are some insane set-ups folks have done with the hv20 and 30.

  • its creepy how she talks in 3rd person like all of us are her grandchildren

  • i was thinking about getting this camera. insted i went out and bought a GL2

  • i got mine off ebay for 500 bucks

  • So what should a beginner like me be shooting in? As in image options? I dont understand all these different options available and just want to shoot... I dont know if I should be shooting in HD or Standard, if any options should be pushed like this '25p' or anything else... Should I be shooting in normally in 'TV' mode then when I want it to look like movie I select the 'Cine' mode? Or should I be shooting regularly with something other than TV mode? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • ... I want a $100 coupon for best buy... Then I could actually afford an HV30...

Now I'm sad... Is there anywhere that still has coupons?

  • do you know how you can record video from a dvd player or computer screen?

  • Why do you talk in third person...

  • Thank you. I believe most of the people are confused with this "Full HD" or "HD ready". It's not only that they didn't take the time to answer... Anyway, what you wrote is what I thought.

So it should be possible to make a "Full HD"-movie (1920x1080p) Nice!

    Ciao
