Over the Christmas Holidays PAC (Pembrokeshire Against the (badger) Cull) decided to mount two dramatic small scale protests, The Great Escape on Christmas Eve and the Badger Dash on the 28th December 2009.he Great Escape was a protest where thirty PAC supporters dressed as Badgers, escaped from the Welsh Wildlife Centres nature reserve (owned by The Wildlife Trust, South and West Wales).
These aimed to raise awareness of the fact the Welsh Assembly Government's Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones had (against all the best scientific advice) decided to exterminate Badgers in North Pembrokeshire as one of several measures such as movement restrictions and improved biosecurity, in an attempt to eradicate bovine TB. If this is deemed successful, the extermination could be potentially extended to the rest of Wales.

There will be no scientific way of appraising the efficacy of slaughtering badgers, as it is being carried out with no comparatives or controls. As it is not a scientific experiment we can only conclude it is a political action.

This action is the latest in a history of seemingly bungling incompetence, where unreliable bTB tests fail to confirm or deny a cow is infected and infected cattle have been moved from bTB hotspots to replace herds culled after Foot and Mouth, in areas that were largely clear of the bovine TB.

As a result and not surprisingly, there has been a sudden alarming increase in bTB outbreaks.

We believe our farmers are being poorly served by WAG Rural affairs and its Chief Veterinary Officer because vaccination, rather than exterminating Badgers is about to be trialled in England, as recommended by the leading scientists.


Vaccination worked with humans so it could work with other species. Contrary to all the best advice from institutions such as the Independent Science Group, Imperial College, and the London Zoological Society, WAG is going it alone in killing badgers. The pilot area is supposedly contained within natural barriers that are supposed to prevent badgers from the area escaping into surrounding farmland. PAC recognises the disease may be passed on by Badgers to cattle although the evidence is not clear. Many other mammals including deer, dogs, cats and humans could do so.

WAG contractors will come to this wildlife reserve to exterminate the two badger sets, entirely against the will of the Wildlife Trust and its members. There is nothing we can do to stop this. If a badger escapes by crossing the bridge across the River Teifi It will be protected by law!

The aim of the Badger Dash was also to highlight the fact that another so called natural barrier the Preseli Hills would also not be an effective barrier to badgers. Again thirty or so PAC supporters took part in the protest to demonstrate the stupidity of Elin Jones strategy.

PAC is committed to protesting against this proposed barbaric and ill founded badger extermination by using peaceful, intelligent and dignified means and we are currently planning several to take place in the coming months.

Another larger scale Great Escape will take place on Easter Saturday (10th of April) as the last part of a Wildlife Trust family day to be held at the Welsh Wildlife Centre to make people aware and inform them of the latest news, all supporters welcome. http://www.welshwildlife.org/wwcIntro_en.link
