Singing Tip for beginners by Esther Danmeri.

How to Sing In Tune

1. Start out by singing with another voice NOT with an instrument. The sound of an instrument is different to the voice and if you are not confident yet about singing in tune it will be much easier to hear the sameness or difference if you practice with another voice. If you find it easy with another voice then go ahead and try with instruments but this video is for complete beginners.

2. Get a friend to practice with who you know can sing in tune. If you are a woman practice with a woman, if you are a man practice with a man. The reason that it is important to practice with someone of the same gender is to make things as easy as possible for you in the beginning. Even though a man and a woman might be able to sing exactly the same note the point is the same as number 1- there is a difference in the quality of both voices so do yourself a favour and practice with someone who will sound more like you do!

3. Start out with YOU making the first sound. It is much easier for you if your only job is to receive the information about the relationship between what you and your friend are singing in the beginning. Later on you can try being the person to match the sound of your friend but to do that right at the start is like jumping in the deep end of the pool before you know you can swim. It's scary and you might drown simply due to panicking!

4. Get your friend to match the note that you sing. Your job is to pay attention to how it feels when your friend is matching your note, when you are both in alignment making the SAME sound together. If you have never really paid attention to such a concept before then you might not know what you are looking for. Just be curious at to how it might feel different in the next step when your friend sings something different to you.

5. You sing another note (it's helpful if it's the same one that you just sung but if not then not to worry) the point is that your friend is going to join in again but this time singing something that is OUT of alignment with your note. Again your job is simply to be aware of how this feels. Can you feel a different quality to the sound that you are both producing together? If you had to put a word to describe it what would you say? Unbalanced? Uneven? Off? Different? Whatever works for you is fine. You are getting used to identifying your own way of perceiving a difference that you may not have identified clearly before.

6. Once your friend has found a place to sing that you can really feel is different then keep repeating the two experiences- in alignment and out of alignment, same and different until you get more and more used to how it feels, how you perceive the difference.

NOTES
It's useful if your friend is able to identify which intervals (gaps between the notes) you find it easy/hard to identify the difference. Over time you want to practice your friend getting closer and closer to the note you are singing but not being 100% in alignment and you being able to tell when they end up completely matching you.

This is a great first step and the most simple way to start out with getting used to singing in tune. If you can explore in this kind of way it takes the pressure off at the start and you can build up at your own pace.

  • Esther - thanks, really informative video. I have a question. I am supposed to travel out of country in one week where I have invited to sing at an event. I got laryngitis 10 days ago I am supposed to leave in 1 week but I still can't sing. Do you have any tips to recover quickly from Laryngitis? I am taking meds through a doctor, taking steam inhalation, gargling salty water, resting the voice, taking herb teas. And I am still wondering if I should cancel my flight. HELP

  • @hopefaithlight Great name! Thanks for your comment. It sounds like you are doing all the recommended things - seeing a doctor, steaming, resting your voice. Laryngitis can come about for a variety of reasons and can last differing lengths of time. If it was me I would let the hosts of the event know that I currently have laryngitis but am waiting to see how it goes before cancelling the flight. That way you can reduce any stress. Good luck.

  • please make another one 'bout sing melody then convert in to words

    Thnx alot

  • @AKASLOVERBOY Thanks for leaving a comment. I'm not quite sure what you are asking for - can you explain what you mean again? Is there a particular melody you want to sing and are having trouble with? And when you say convert in to words do you mean having a transcript of the video in words underneath like this one?
