  • Hi Antony if you have the book the way of the ninja by Masaaki Hatsumi look on page 110 there is a image of a Densho with a senban shuriken. hope that was helpful!

  • @tarquinogilvie i do not, what does the caption say (normally it is a Takamatsu pic)

  • @TSOAS2008 it says it is a written Densho sent from Toshitsugu Takamtsu to Hatsumi and I can see a senban shuriken on it.

  • @tarquinogilvie so that makes it 1960's and very modern. So dead end i am afraid.

  • what if "Shuriken" in context was an invention to cause confusion (like saying throw "Smurf"); Combat training scrolls must have been of an enormous value for the War Schools, so why not deceiving by writing about some new hidden weapon, just to create tension and dominate the Game board.

*after all a Troll does what a Troll does.

  • Not sure if its any great help, but I was always told that the Shuriken was one of the Tobi-Dogu 飛び道具 (lit: Weapons For Killing Distant Enemies) and that there was a distinct difference between the throwing spikes/arrows/darts/knives called 手裏剣 Shuriken (Lit: hand hidden blade) and the wheel/start shaped blades called 車剣 Shaken (lit:Wheel Blade).

    Hope it helps

  • I'm not surprised that it's difficult to find historical examples. It's a stupid weapon.

  • @TSOAS2008 Just a sujestion, they might be able to find you a manual or point you the right dirrection to find what you are looking for.

Or at least a start, where else to begin at ? And if they don't, then you can at least try the indervidual schools you see and try from there.

  • @TSOAS2008 You're welcome, I know it is more about "when shuriken-jutsu" became renown with shinobi, in paticular specific types of suriken, in there lays the problem.

Suriken as you said can be a very broad and general word, from anything crafted as a throwing weapon to something used a throwing weapon.

I don't know if it any help but, check the nihon kobudo kyokai, still Koryu school that practise shuriken-jutsu with ken and iai jutsu. Just an idea.

  • @OMFGHUGEWOLF cheers mate, getting closer.

  • @TSOAS2008 Eishin-Ryu, or Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu. I know very main stream way of saying it, but I hope it gives some sort of governing factor at least.

As far as tradition, etiquette is the main part of what we study. But as I have had explained to me the way you "cap" the sword when you have finished can be used to hide or conceal rocks or stones you have picked up, returning to the obi, incase you have a hidden blade you wish to use, no Idea if this is of any help but ty for your response

  • @OMFGHUGEWOLF what school do you do and do they have traditions?
