Both Aldabra and Galapagos Tortoises can be seen in the Zoo's Reptile and Amphibian House.

It is very difficult to tell them apart. But, if you look closely at the mid portion of the shell, just above the tortoises' heads, you can see the nuchal scute on the shells of the Aldabra tortoises.

  • @awesomeH2O That is one of the wonderful things about zoos. They allow species that would not normally encounter each other in the wild to have the opportunity to live peacefully together.

The information gathered from observing encounters like this may some day be very useful if we need to help endangered species find new habitats in which to survive.

  • Why do they keep the two species together? I don't think they coexist in the wild, do they? Well...they could actually get along anyway. After all, they probably have gotten used to each other.

  • Thanks!

It's amazing how much you can learn at zoos!

  • And they're off!!! LOL! Our zoo has Aldabras but no Galapagos. I didn't know that about telling them apart by the shells. Great info.
