James Kalm battles the season opening crowds in Chelsea to report on this, the third one-man exhibition by de Balincourt. As one of New York's "hot" young artists, de Balincourt is saddled with high expectations. This exhibition appears to establish his practice as a stable and adventurous one. With an increase in scale, and an audacious use of color and text, these paintings display a new maturity and a less obvious politicized approach to subject matter. An ironic gloss on abstraction is also a new path that seems to bear comical fruit.
