"At a certain point in the night, time gets a mind of its own, racing and standing still.  We become mired in minutes thinking that this night won't end. Is there anyone who wants our night hued words?  We can try to write them in a different color, but at this hour, we don't get a say in the matter.

Tonight, you and I are stretched between our pasts and our futures, and at present we're running out of skin.  We remember the mountains of yesteryear and we can see the peaks of tomorrow, but how do we bridge the gap between the girls and boys we used to be and the men and women we want to be without thinking it's okay to remain as we are?  We hear dozens of voices singing to us that we're perfect as we are now, but a perfect lie isn't perfect at all.

You and I are no mystery.  We are as easy to read as anyone else.  We can wear as many deceiving smiles as we want, but as long as we etch these words onto our skin, they can figure us out.  We hoard our memories, good and bad.  Clutch them to our chests as best we can, but still things fall by the wayside before we even realize they're gone.  Our stomachs are empty. There are no guts to be found and we are without the courage to speak properly.

The truth is, we want to be better.  One day we will learn not to hold onto things that don't want to hold on to us. The love we get should be proportional to the love we give, and you and I have both given out enough love for an entire world of broken hearts. We can search for the pieces from our own, retracing our steps, but like Hansel and Gretel, our bread crumbs have been eaten by crows who would have us lose our way.

Tears can be like lenses. Sometimes we see the world clearer through them. I'm not one for crying, at least not when I can be seen, but if I turn out all the lights, you and I can let salt puddles pool in our eyes and look to the future.  Where we have the courage to be better.  Where we learn to say goodbye.  Where our legs grow strong enough for us to walk away.  And where we won't turn around, because we finally have the will to set our eyes forward and face the oncoming storm."
