The objective of doing this is not to make your iPod/iPhone bounce across concrete.

It makes it less likely to be broken or scratched when dropped.... Having it at the right places would prevent the actual iPhone from touching the ground.

This would work well for giving external hard drives that little bit more shck protection also.

Not that I would recommend throwing around a mechanical hard drive like this! ;)
