here i am using an ignition coil driven by a 555 and a 2n3055 (as i always do), to produce arcs inside a vase that a hose blows Argon gas into... That reduces the atm pressure somewhat and Argon helps the arcs get bigger

  • Argon will ionize at atmospheric pressure. Large plasma discharges can be drawn at atmospheric pressure in an aquarium full of Argon gas. Try it.

  • it does reduce pressure because it is flowing with high speed through the tube in the vase and back out but your other remarks are also true
