Over the better part of the past year, a great debate has taken place in Washington and across America, about how to reform our health care system to provide security for people with insurance, coverage for those without insurance, and lower costs for everyone. From the halls of Congress to the homes of ordinary Americans, this debate has helped us to forge consensus and find common ground. Thats a good thing. Thats what America is all about.

Now, as the debate draws to a close, we can point to a broad and growing coalition of doctors and nurses, workers and businesses, hospitals and even drug companies folks who represent different parties and perspectives, including leading Democrats and many leading Republicans who recognize the urgency of action. Just this week, the Senate Finance Committee approved a reform proposal that has both Democratic and Republican support. For the first time ever, all five committees in Congress responsible for health reform have passed a version of legislation. As I speak to you today, we are closer to reforming the health care system than we have ever been in history.

But this is not the time to pat ourselves on the back. This is not the time to grow complacent. There are still significant details and disagreements to be worked out in the coming weeks. And there are still those who would try to kill reform at any cost. The history is clear: for decades rising health care costs have unleashed havoc on families, businesses, and the economy. And for decades, whenever we have tried to reform the system, the insurance companies have done everything in their considerable power to stop us.

We know that this inaction has carried a terrible toll. In the past decade, premiums have doubled. Over the past few years, total out of pocket costs for people with insurance rose by a third. And we know that if we do not reform the system, this will only be a preview of coming attractions. A new report for the Business Roundtable a non-partisan group that represents the CEOs of major ...

So what happened in the 60's? Health care was affordable for everyone.

Then government brought in Medicare, and Medicaid. Then, in the 70s, collusion between the medical establishment, drug companies and politicians created the whole HMO / managed care system in an effort to move us further toward a universal care system.

This completely unnecessary level of corporatism dramatically increases costs and worsens care.

  • This is absolutley right. They operate like the mafia, and should be prosecuted for running a glorified protection racket, extorting money from all of us and denying "payment" when we get sick, so they can buy their private jets and mansions. Forget RICO, they should be charged with crimes against humanity.

  • @flamingfigures I'm sorry Flam but it did cost your family. Everyone paid for your healthcare it wasn't free. Healthcare was once very affordable in this country (US). When our government got involved and promoted Corporatism/Crony Capitalism costs skyrocketed. The fact is there's a dearth of competition in this industry coupled with Corporatism and this is dramatically increasing costs. I'm glad you got what you needed but that meant everyone payed.

  • @MichelleSujai Wow my statement from 2 years ago lol. I've only been awake for about 3 years and still very much believe in what I stated back then. Thx for reminding me.

I still do believe that government just needs to 'butt out' of healthcare completely. They have intervened in it to long. Just like housing, and college.

  • @EndTheFedRes Since Obama Care has been in the mix my existing health insurance premiums have jumped over $150 a month & co-payments have doubled. This reminds me of mandatory car insurance. Now that we must get insurance we pay much for little coverage! Mandatory insurance will be abused. We need the same type of Universal Health care as they have in France. Nothing more, nothing less. Mandatory car insurance needs to be repealed & all insurance companies need to be abolished.

  • THE 3 BIGGEST LIES by a president-

    1. read my lips- no new taxes-

    2. I didn't inhale-

    3. I just released my long form birth certificate-

Which one is the LIE of the century? Ask Alan Keyes or Pastor James David Manning-

They R decent black men who will loudly state- OBAMA IS A FRAUD-

Keyes & Manning both refuse to call him president and Pastor Manning is shocked at his brazen audacity to FORGE a birth certificate and then put it on COFFEE-CUPS & T-SHIRTS for Democratic fundraisers-

Be very thankful your Canadian .... You must feel proud you live in a country that actually cares about it's own people.... USA has turned into a fascist nation that is run by big business and the elite who can care less about human beings... ONLY there profits... it's truly pathetic....

  • I'm Canadian. I was born with cleft lip. Without any cost on my family at all I've had surgeries performed to correct it over the years and now it's unnoticeable. They've covered dental, because there were issues caused by it. I'm also depressed, but not because of that. I couldn't imagine my life should I have been someone in the USA who couldn't afford my surgeries - socially outcast with depression due to poverty and deformity. I can't stand to hear Americans opposed to universal health care.

  • Obama and his administration are fighting for people that are poor, and sick. This takes it's toll on the people who are able to contribute. Everybody that hates Obama is essentially selfish and nearsighted, because they prefer to have less taxes and less government, even though that means that a lot of already poor and sick people will suffer more without gvt. helping them.

  • What's the difference between a zoo and the white house? A zoo has an african lion, the white house has a lyin' african! LOL!
