I thought "Zeppelin vs. Pterodactyls" was just an idea that was floated by Hammer Films in 1971 and never developed. It turns out Hammer was just reviving this forgotten Republic Pictures serial from 1936.

Watch for tiny parts by Bela Lugosi, Noah Beery, John Wayne, Ralph Byrd, John King, the Wilhelm Scream and Terence Stamp.

Why does that kid exclaim "Mammy" as if that's the 1936 equivalent of "sweet"?

  • Does anyone know what plane that is attacking the airship? (+ the original story was to have a ww1 airship blow offcourse during a bombing raid, and end up on an unknown island)

  • @zeppship Those clips are from Dick Tracy (1937), and it's supposed to be some kind of "Flying Wing", similar to the one in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

  • is that an electrical post at 3:56

  • @AgentKittyKatswell It does look like an telephone pole, but I think it's supposed to be a tree. The clip is taken from "The Lost World" and there are scenes where the heroes climb up to that spot and get across a gorge by knocking over the tree and using it as a bridge. (Or one of the dinosaurs knocks over the tree, I can't remember.) You can see the pterodactyl close-up next to that tree trunk around 4:20

  • is there a full movie of this one??

  • @AgentKittyKatswell Sorry, no, this is just a short mashup clip. There was no movie made, although I'm working on some crocheted biplanes and zeppelins as props for music videos, Zeppelin vs. Pterodactyls: The Musical. (Original songs, not "Give Me A Wing and a Song" that Ace Drummond sings in this clip.)

  • If that guy tried singing like that on a flight in today's day and age, he'd be wrestled to the floor by an Air Marshal and tazed into unconsciousness.

  • Wish I had a pterodactyl

  • Damn pterodactyls are the reason we don't have trans-Atlantic zeppelins anymore.

  • Great stuff! Have you seen "J-Men Forever"?

  • That isn't even remotely what the inside of a Zeppelin looks like. Zeppelins resemble ocean liners or small hotels with a bit of luxury railroad thrown in, not a shitty little airplane cabins with tiny windows. Which is probably what that footage is from.

  • The name of airship is "Potrzebie" which in Polish means " in need". Awesome oldschool SF though
