500 years ago, Henry and Katherine were jointly anointed and crowned on Sunday, 24 June 1509, which coincided with Midsummer. Henry was four days short of his 18th birthday; Katherine was 23. The ceremony was lavish and included a mass.
Some historians feel that the joint coronation was evidence of Henry's love for Katherine. It was normal in those times to wait to coronate a queen consort after she gave birth to an heir, as had been the case with Henrys own mother. Henry broke with this tradition. The banquet, jousts, and tourneys followed the coronation ceremony. Five days after the coronation and the day after he turned 18,
Henry's grandmother, Margaret Beauford, died. She had helped plan the coronation and was seen by Henry as the force behind the Tudor dynasty.
