Performers clad head-to-toe in hand-made crocheted body suits are enacting Yoko Ono's "Painting to Shake Hands" instruction. With hands protruding from holes in canvases, performers welcome handshakes from members of the public. By directly engaging strangers in the simple act of shaking hands, an undeniably human connection is made and the intimidating façade of the art world is broken down.
This performance, titled "Crocheted Grapefruit" was staged by Olek, inspired by one of Yoko Ono's instructions from her 1964 book "Grapefruit".
The instructions read:
Painting To Shake Hands
(painting for cowards)
Drill A Hole In A Canvas And Put Your Hand Out From Behind
Receive Your Guests In That Position
Shake Hands And Converse With Hands
1961 Autumn
"Grapefruit"
A Book Of Instructions And Drawings By Yoko Ono
