By the look of him in the second part of the film it's not his first can either! Is it a young Rab perhaps?

The safety system seems to be phone to get the next train to push the broken down train to the next station. Alternatively if evacuation is needed the driver shoves a metal bar onto the live rail and everybody is herded in complete darkness down the tunnel to the next station while he has a primitive lantern. If you see a white light coming towards you do not panic it will be another herd of people broken down going in the opposite direction.
