"A picture is worth a thousand words."
- Napoleon Bonaparte

What does that mean? To me, that means nothing. I mean, a picture's a picture. How can it have a meaning with words if you don't see any?

That's what I thought as I took another picture of the ocean with the sun setting for the 100th time. Okay, maybe not the 100th time...but you get my point, I was frustrated as I tried to capture the beauty of the sun setting down into the ocean. I've been doing this all day and I was becoming tired and annoyed.

My name is Nick Jonas and I'm a photographer. Taking pictures is what I do for a living. Whether it's nature, people, or places, I always have a camera in hand. I don't necessarily love taking photos, but it's all I have as a part time job so I can't complain. And how many people do you know can actually tell you that their best friend is a camera?

After a few minutes passed, the sun finally went down. I started to pack up my things in my bag and headed out before it got too dark to see where I was going. I started walking out of the sand and onto the road when out of nowhere a car came heading straight towards me.

I gasped. I had no idea that there were any cars on the street at all at the time. I tried to get out of the way but I tripped on my bag and fell. As the car was just about to squash me into a pancake, I got out just in time.

My heart was still pounding in my chest as I rolled on into the sand. I soon panicked because I couldn't find my bag but it turned out it was right next to me. Unfortunately, my camera was not and was broken and crushed in the middle of the road shattered into a million pieces. There I go with the exaggerating thing again. Even though my only and expensive camera may not have been broken into a million pieces, it felt like my heart was.

Where ever I went I took photos, when I met someone new I took their picture, all my memories were on that camera. Basically, my whole life was captured in that black, tiny square object. Without it, I felt so different, lost, and confused. Now I had no friends at all.

I can't believe I never showed anyone my pictures or even saved them on a computer, so how stupid did you think I felt? Very. If only I wasn't so private with photography I would've had at least one photo to look at. How was I supposed to remember my childhood, my old friends, amazing views, cities, everywhere I went? Memory won't be enough, will it? I'll never forget this, I told myself.

It was only then when I realized the true meaning of that quote. Words will never be enough to explain how special a picture is to you and it can never be replaced. A picture can hold a memory and if you look hard enough you start to think about and notice every detail and what it means to you. Pictures can also tell stories and most importantly, pictures can hold some of the greatest moments of our lives. Everything's gone now, I thought.

My whole life changed that day.
