I believe in the faith OF Jesus, not the faith ABOUT Jesus. There is a huge difference to me. The message that Jesus taught was the simplest faith of all. It was men, through greed and struggle for power, that corrupted it. What started through him as simple faith for all men, became a complex thing of form and ritual, of commandments and thou-shalt-nots. This is the sort of thing that Jesus came to save us from, and even though corrupted, the true message shines through to those who truly seek.

I know you won't agree with this, and this is just the way I personally read the gospels and the way the Holy Spirit has led me to believe them, but, when Jesus says trust in the son he means trust in ourselves. He told us that God is the very best of us. Jesus invited us all to stand face-to-face with God, which is why he came in the form of a man. He called on men to throw away fear, disregard the limitations of their mortality, and embrace God as their father. God is the father of all men.

The apostle John also stated that "Whoever transgresses and the not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son." (2 John 9)

Compare your statement, "Clinging to ideas and beliefs isn't faith" with what Jesus actually said; "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:36) So our faith or trust in Jesus Christ for salvation is what will determine our eternal destiny either heaven or hell.

This is Ignorance in the face of Truth. This minister would've sided with the Jewish leaders in condemning Jesus and his liberal translation of the Jewish Law. The attachment to his beliefs and doctrines is the same attachment that those scribes and pharisees had to their "law". Ironically, the very bible this man clings to for salvation warns those "hardening their hearts" against the understanding granted by God in whatever form he delivers it. Clinging to ideas and beliefs isn't faith.
