  • in 1971 the porsche lh gulf number 18 was timed at 3.13.986 and had a top speed of 394kmh in practise and testing they coverd the gaps and intakes and was clocked at over 400kmh crazy for the time and the average speed was just over 160 mph

  • If this is Derek Bell - and I believe it is - then that other Porsche at 6:40 is not Jacky Ickx because Ickx and Bell shared the same car that year. It's far more likely to be Stefan Bellof.

  • The Rothmans Porsches were NOT timed at 246mph during the 1983 race. The fastest car that year was a Porsche 936 which was clocked at a tad over 230mph. This figure is from the official speed trap records from that era, if anyone wants to look them up. The Autotechnical Annual always publishes them. Sounds impressive but it's wrong.

  • You're right in some aspects. However, this clip is from 1983 and the car IS a Rothmans Porsche and IS driven by Derek Bell.

  • Lloyd never released any DVDs of onboard laps at Le Mans, did he? Derek managed to visit the Nurburgring, Fuji, and Spa with onboard laps and commentaries for each.

  • The commentator says 1983 in the video at about 5:10

  • Okay, I stand corrected....sort of. The chicanes were put in before the 1990 race which was a few years after this. In fact, 1990 was the beginning of the end for this kind of speed as it became frowned upon by the FIA for safety concerns.

BTW, what does your quote mean here? 'He who know not history'...usually ends with something else.
