Part of a eight part series documentary on the Martial Arts of south and south east Asia, originally broadcast on the BBC in the early 1980s. This episode follows the very old, yet ever developing, Philippino martial art, Eskrima. It has developed, largely, due to the use of knives in the Philippines and teaches one how to defend against and use knives or small blades. Part 1 of 4 parts.

  • I like diony canete, but I don't believe Eskrima is the best, although I do like to use it. It's effective for me.

  • the knife techniques in eskrima is the best part to me...in real life situation grappling and boxing can only take you so far.

  • @Don0chi0cho mabuhay!

  • I love how the master is like all aloof and quiet in the corner but he'll probably be like a demon when challenged in a fight.

  • @dado112761 When the Spaniards invaded what we now know as the Philippines, they named it Las Islas Filipinas after their king, Felipe II of Spain. When America conquered Las Islas Filipinas, they renamed it the Philippines because Philip is the English equivalent of Felipe. The next time the Philippines is conquered and renamed by the whim of the conqueror, would you want to be called whatever that new name is? Would that be stylish too?
