ESL VIDEO TRANSCRIPT - ENGLISH GERUNDS
Part 1 - Learn English Grammar: Lesson For Gerunds
1 Adding "ing" to a verb (e.g.watch + -ing = watching) makes a gerund which is a noun for an activity of someone or something. Gerunds have a general meaning. For a more specific meaning, you can use a gerund phrase by adding a word (e.g. watching ants) or several words (e.g. watching fire ants) makes a gerund phrase. You can add a verb(s) (e.g. watching fire ants work), a prepositional phrase(s) (e.g. watching fire ants work in their colonies) or other words. Gerund phrases are commonly used as subjects and objects in English grammar. For example, this long gerund phrase is used as a subject of a simple sentence: Watching fire ants work in their colonies is amazing. But this gerund phrase is used as a object: Roger likes watching fire ants work in their colonies.
