Ever noticed how some paintings seem to draw you into them? Some of them hold your attention and direct your eyes to a very strong, almost profound, centre of interest. How do they do that? What makes them so compelling? Well, there’s always a number of things which work together to do this, but it’s surprising how often the spotlight effect can be seen doing this in all number of paintings throughout history, right back to the Renaissance when they first starting thinking about lighting effects.

So what is the spotlight effect and how can you use it in your paintings? Watch this video to find out.

  • That is incredible. It is amazing what can be created with light and focus. That is a challenging endeavor. A good computer program can really help navigate the way without regrets. Awesome video. Thanks

  • Thanks GB. Photoshop is a wonderful thing - it's definitely a lot harder with paint!
